Tourism blow to Cong after axing of bus route

The village of Cong could be dealt a serious economic blow with the news that Bus Éireann is to cut the route from the town to Galway city. The national bus operator announced a number of cut backs on routes across the country last week including the axing of this route which came a shock to those in the area.

Early childcare supplement cut will hit after elections

The cut in the early childcare supplement payments will come into effect after this week’s election. The supplement which will now be cut in half from €83 to €41.50 was held off from being cut in April and the reduced payment will now come into effect from Monday June 8.

There are 700 car parking spaces in the town core of Westport, of which 31 are disabled car parking spaces. Nineteen of these spaces are fully accessible for wheelchair users. The remaining 12 are ambulant disabled car parking spaces, provided for non wheelchair users.

Corrib protesters gear up for summer of unrest

Tensions in north Mayo have escalated once again with eight arrests over the weekend and one on Tuesday when a large number of protesters gathered for the summer Rossport Peace Camp. With the Solitaire due to arrive back in Mayo waters in the next month, the Rossport Solidarity Camp has taken up residence in Glengad in a bid to build up the resistance to Shell over the coming weeks and months. Mary Sweeney of the Rossport Solidarity Camp said: “Resistance in Mayo is building again. We’re expecting many waterborne activists from across Europe to arrive over the following weeks. The Solitaire will leave Irish waters once again with no pipeline laid.”
