A Lithuanian man who said he just wanted to go home was this week asked by Judge Mary Devins in Claremorris District Court, “You want to go home like ET?” Ricardis Belickes, 38 Ashling Drive, Ballyhaunis, replied “No, I want to go home to Ballyhaunis.”

Ballina and Castlebar clean-up in IBAL anti litter league

There was good news this week for Mayo’s two largest towns with Ballina and Castlebar maintaining their Clean to European Norms status. The Irish Business Against Litter league published its first results of 2009 which saw Ballina and Castlebar in 38th and 40th place respectively out of 60 towns surveyed.

Achill cycling hub launched

A cycle hub around Achill was officially launched last week as part of the National Cycle Network throughout Ireland being championed by Fáilte Ireland.

The Achill cycle hub has a number of looped cycle routes around beautiful Achill starting at Keel, as well as facilities and services for cyclists visiting the island.

Ms O’Malley has 20 years’ experience working in the community and rural development sector and since 1997 has been CEO of Longford Community Resources Ltd, the integrated LEADER and Partnership company for County Longford. Ms O’Malley, a native of Currane, Achill, will take up her position as CEO on July.

Five years and a month after Declan Ganley chaired the Libertas forum to discuss the European Constitution during Ireland's presidency of the European Union he walked off the political stage, as the sun began to set outside the count centre for the North West Constituency in Castlebar on Monday. Surrounded by a flash of cameras and a fan of microphones, the Libertas founder said his farewell to public life. “I have said that I would seek a mandate from the people and it's pretty clear that I did not get the mandate from the people here. I can take no for answer, I'm a democrat and I love my country.”

An American woman in her seventies was airlifted from Croagh Patrick on Wednesday night after sustaining serious head injuries.

The woman, who is from the state of Colorado, was walking on the mountain with her partner when she fell and suffered the injuries.
