Every Mayo classroom to get IT equipment

Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary has welcomed the announcement by the Government that every classroom in the country is to receive a teaching laptop, software and digital projector over the next three years as part of the €150 million Smart Schools plan. The major high-tech drive was launched by An Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

Ballina man terrorised another into withdrawing cash from ATMs

An 18-year-old man who stole a mobile phone and then made the injured party withdraw €700 from various ATMs in order get the phone back, was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday where he was sentenced to St Patrick’s Institution for theft. The Ballina man was also jailed for using counterfeit notes.

A 21-year-old unemployed man from Ballina, who drove off from a garda after he was informed that he would be summonsed in relation to not having an NCT certificate for his vehicle, was disqualified from driving at Ballina District Court this week.

Woman jailed after she spat at and kicked garda in groin

A 19-year-old woman who, when approached by a garda after she flung a wheelie bin into the middle of the road, spat at and kicked the garda in the groin, was sentenced to jail for 15 months at Ballina District Court this week. Her boyfriend was also sent to prison for nine months for obstructing the same garda.
