Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane, who tabled a motion at the monthly Castlebar Town Council meeting last week calling on Mayo County Council to revert to standard road markings at roundabouts in the Castlebar, has welcomed an agreement from the town manager to erect signage on the approach to roundabouts.

American man found guilty of assaulting delivery driver

Main Street refurbishment ready to get under way

The long awaited refurbishment of Main Street in Castlebar will be underway shortly, the members of Castlebar Town Council were told last week at their monthly meeting. “We advertised for contractors in December and we have now gone through the notification period for those who were successful and those who weren’t,” town manager Seamus Granahan told the meeting. “The contract was awarded to Kilcross Construction and was worth €950,000. We will be meeting with them next week to work out a programme of work for the project and my intention is that once this is worked out I will bring together the councillors, traders and the Chamber of Commerce as to the time span and the programme of work and how it will affect different areas.”

Trade union ‘blacklists’ Cllr Flynn over ‘scandalous’ comments

The Mayo branch of IMPACT Trade Union last week instructed 450 members in Mayo local authorities to refuse to meet with, take phone calls/e-mails, or deal with any written correspondence/representation from Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn, following his remarks made at the recent county council meeting where he hit out at the industrial action being taken by the members of the public service unions in Mayo County Council in their dispute over pay cuts. Councillor Flynn has hit back at such treatment saying that he is being backlisted in Mayo “because I dared to speak out against the trade union movement”.

Suspended sentence for heroin possession

A man from the Czech Republic, of Roma gypsy descent, who pleaded guilty to possession of €40 worth of heroin was given a four month suspended sentence at Claremorris District Court this week. Roman Zigmund with an address at 29 Lisbawn, Claremorris, pleaded guilty to the possession charge at a court hearing in September last year but the sentencing was adjourned until this week.

No change to Castlebar Town Council meeting time despite work to rule

The work to rule by members of the public sector saw Castlebar Town Council meet last week without a town engineer or assistant in his place. “Because of the industrial action neither the town engineer nor his assistant nor other members will be here,” town manager Seamus Granahan told the meeting. “I suggest that we would have our next meeting during working hours.”

Durcan rips up reprimand letter, while Condon tells him to ‘cop on’

Independent councillor Frank Durcan showed in no uncertain terms this week what he thought about a letter and a copy of the code of conduct for councillors, which he received from county secretary John Condon, reprimanding him for his actions at the previous meeting of the local authority. Walking from his seat in the chamber to the top bench, Cllr Durcan told the meeting, “You can do what you want with that (the letter) as far as I’m concerned, and the code,” as he started to tear the letter into small pieces before dropping the remains of it on front of the county secretary.

Overcrowding and strike action ongoing at Mayo General

There was serious overcrowding experienced at Mayo General Hospital this week with 23 patients being treated on trolleys on Wednesday, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation trolley watch survey.
