HSE refuses to meet delegation concerning Belmullet Hospital bed closures

A Dáil deputy has severely rapped the HSE for failing to meet a deputation to discuss the future of Belmullet District Hospital. The Fine Gael Spokesperson on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Michael Ring, said he was “shocked” HSE management would not meet with a deputation, prior to a decision being made on the proposed closure of portion of the hospital.

Rental income for two Mayo TDs and golf membership for Kenny

The Register of Interests of members of Dáil Éireann from January to the end of 2009 published this week shows that two Mayo TDs have no other sources of income, while Ballina TD Dara Calleary and Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony have rental incomes supporting their TD salary and the leader of the Fine Gael party Enda Kenny TD has been given memberships of three golf clubs.

Fires blazed throughout Mayo this week

An outbreak of gorse fires blazed throughout Mayo over the past number of days which led to the county’s fire services tackling extensive fires in Castlebar, Westport, Foxford, Louisburgh, Kiltimagh, and Ballinrobe. However according to a Garda spokesperson the fires were not suspicious in nature.

More than a thousand farmers still waiting for REPS 4 payments

Only 72 Mayo farmers have received their REPS 4 payments in the past month leaving 1,204 farmers in the county still without their money. The situation has been described as “unacceptable” by Deputy John O’Mahony who has had this information supplied to him.

Durcan wants to see report on ground testing for new bridge

Independent councillor Frank Durcan has asked to see the report from the ground testing carried out by contractors on behalf of Castlebar Town Council in relation to the new footbridge at Lough Lannagh. The councillor had asked for the report at the previous meeting of the local authority. “I met the people who were doing the ground survey by accident one day I was down there walking,” he told the meeting last week. “They were getting paid €42,000 to carry out the work here, they told me Castlebar must be awash with money to have them down from Roscommon doing this work, as two blobs of concrete would hold any bridge like they’re putting in.”

Mary Robinson the people’s choice for name of Ballina footbridge

It is official, the most popular name for the Ballina pedestrian footbridge is to name the structure after former president Mary Robinson. This comes after the Fianna Fáil members of Ballina Town Council were accused of snubbing Mrs Robinson by Fine Gael councillor Michelle Mulherin, an accusation which was denied vehemently by the Fianna Fáil contingent on the council.
