Over €500,000 in public liability claimants

The injuries Board has released figures showing that during 2009, 22 public liability claims were awarded in the county, bringing the total compensation given to these claimants to €565,312.

Nationally €33 million in awards was made to 1,443 claimants. Females account for seven out of every ten claimants and slips, trips and falls cause most public liability accidents. Just over half of the accidents under review took place in privately owned establishments – with one in four occurring in a retail/shopping outlet, one in five in a hotel/pub/nightclub or restaurant and 7 per cent in leisure facilities like sports clubs/gyms and cinemas. Almost a quarter of PL awards were made against Local Authorities and a further eight involved transport and utility services.

Family Resource Centres are increasingly acting as a lifeline for people who have lost their jobs because of the recession. That’s according to the Family Resource Centre National Forum and the Family Support Agency, who launched a report detailing the work of FRCs throughout Ireland over the course of 2009. In Mayo there are FRC’s located in Ballina, Castlebar, Claremorris, Ballyhaunis, Ballinrobe, Westport.

A senior engineer for Mayo County Council reported has stated there needs to be more involvement from community organisations to keep towns clean and litter free. Noel Burke, senior engineer for Mayo County Council, was responding to a question from Cllr Joe Mellet at the Swinford Electoral Area meeting this week about the numbers of people who will be working on town clean ups when the council outdoor staff takes annual builders holidays.
