Presidency must repair Ireland’s international reputation — Davis

Fri, Sep 16, 2011

Ms Davis’ nomination was proposed by Independent councillor Richard Finn and seconded by fellow Independent councillor Michael Holmes. None of the major parties opposed the nomination, with both Sinn Féin and Fine Gael wishing her the best of luck in the election but informing her that they will be supporting their own candidates in the race for the Áras.

National Volunteering Day

Fri, Sep 16, 2011

People across Mayo were rallied to get involved in the National Day of Volunteering which takes place on Friday September 30. Last year more than 8,000 volunteers participated in hundreds of charity and community projects across Mayo and the country – and an even bigger number is anticipated this year. Research carried out by Volunteer Ireland in advance of the National Day of Volunteering has found that being affected by the economic downturn makes people more likely to volunteer. The flagship event of this year’s NDV is a national ‘Knit-a-thon’ which will see hundreds of knitters across the country attempt to break the world record for the most number of people knitting simultaneously. In Mayo, Knit-a-thons will take place in Tacu Family Resource Centre, Ballinrobe, and Le Chéile Family Resource Centre, Castlebar. For information call Marie Munnelly, manager, Mayo Volunteer Centre, 087 755 5899 or Shauna Jackson, outreach/placement officer, Mayo Volunteer Centre, 087 679 6937.
