Judge Devins lashes court service over proposed closures

Judge Mary Devins this week lashed the proposed closure of a number of courts in the county — a move which will see several sittings being moved to Castlebar. The venue in which Judge Devins chose to make her feelings known — Kiltimagh Town Hall, which has hosted the sittings of both Claremorris District Court and Kiltimagh District Court for the past number of years — along with Swinford, is one of the venues set to be cut by the Buildings Subcommittee of the Court Services.

Ballina councillors still waiting for word on removal of signs

The members of Ballina Town Council are still waiting to hear why road signs directing people to Ballina on the N17 outside Claremorris were removed and replaced with tourist destination signs. Fianna Fáil councillor Johnny O’Malley raised the issue again at Wednesday nights meeting of the local authority. “We asked that the county manager report to us what had happened to these signs and what was being done about it at the last meeting, what is the status of that?” asked Cllr O’Malley.

Man in his fifties dies in Binghamstown car crash

Ballina councillors give generously to voluntary bodies

The members of Ballina Town Council this month gave generously to two different voluntary bodies out of their contributions to other bodies funds. Outreach, which deals with mental health issues, and especially the issue of suicide, was given €1,500 worth of funding with Cllr Mary Kelly contributing €1,000 from her allocation for the year and Méara Peter Clarke contributing €500 from his.

Ballina Town Council gets tough on antisocial behaviour

The elected members of Ballina Town Council this week adopted a new antisocial behaviour policy this week, which they worked out in committee recently. The new policy, which has its foundations in a county wide policy, saw a number of different changes brought in by the Ballina councillors to address flaws and issues they thought were not covered sufficiently by the county wide document. As part of their policy there will be quarter yearly meetings between the Gardaí, the council, an the HSE to discuss items that arise. They have also included provisions that anyone who is in housing provided by another agency and are on the council’s housing list can be excluded from the list for 10 years following the issuing of an antisocial behaviour order.

Funding announced for Ballina Swimming Pool

A grant totalling €366,700 has been awarded to Ballina Swimming Pool to improve access for people with disabilities. This is part of a €5 million grant scheme announced this week by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring.

New Lough Lannagh bridge will create ‘immense’ tourism opportunities

Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has welcomed the installation of the new bridge at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar. The bridge was installed on Monday by Thompson Construction, Co Carlow, and will be the focus of the development of a series of new walkways planned for the Castlebar area.
