New Lough Lannagh bridge will create ‘immense’ tourism opportunities

Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has welcomed the installation of the new bridge at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar. The bridge was installed on Monday by Thompson Construction, Co Carlow, and will be the focus of the development of a series of new walkways planned for the Castlebar area.

Cllr Barrett stated: “I'm thrilled to see this new bridge at the installation stage. It was first discussed by the Castlebar development association back in 1947 and the vast potential of what this bridge could open up for Castlebar was recognised. The cost of the bridge was an issue, but when people see the quality of the bridge itself and the walks it will open up for us all, it will have been worth every cent.

“The plan I am supporting, is for a link up between Castlebar and Islandeady, eventually linking to the Greenway in Newport. The potential for tourism here is immense. All credit must go to the foresight of those that initially proposed this bridge and the management and staff of Castlebar Town Council for acting on this idea.”
