Churchfield estate near takeover

The takeover of the Churchfield estate in Shrule is nearing completion, the February meeting of the Claremorris Electoral Area Committee was informed this week. Cllr Patsy O’Brien had a notice of motion down at the meeting calling for the council to finalise it. Padraig Flanagan, senior executive officer for Mayo County Council, informed the meeting that the developer had applied last July for the takeover and there was only one outstanding issue, in relation to a boundary wall, that had to be complied with before it could move ahead.

Councillor wants new junction layout plans for Garrymore

Cllr Patsy O’Brien has called for new layout plans for a junction at Scardaune, Garrymore, which leads up to the sports complex in the village. Senior executive engineer for Mayo County Council Tom Ferrick told the meeting that he had priced this junction two to three years ago and there would have to be some land acquisition by the council and he was not in a position to say if the landowner would sell it. He told the meeting he would make drawings for a proposed change to the junction available to the members.

Councillor wants notice boards for Ballinrobe and Cong

Cllr Damien Ryan this week put forward a notice of motion calling for the council to provide information boards in the towns of Ballinrobe and Cong, so local voluntary groups could put up notices of events coming up in the area. The idea got the full backing of the other members of the council. Director of services for the area Seamus Granahan told the members it might be better to bring the idea to the relevant SPC first so that proper countywide guidelines could be drawn up to ensure such a service would not be abused by commercial interests.

Distressed mortgage holders offered lifeline by new Insolvency Bill — Mulherin

Fine Gael Mayo TD, Michelle Mulherin, has said the Personal Insolvency Bill published last week will give a vital lifeline to distressed mortgage holders and those overwhelmed by personal debts. The Heads of the Bill was published by Ministers Alan Shatter and Michael Noonan this week, and it is hoped it can be published in its legislative form by the end of April.

Twenty three homes in Mayo found with high levels of cancer-causing radon gas
