€181,429 in LEADER funding welcomed for Mayo projects – Ring

Michael Ring TD has welcomed the announcement that funding has been allocated to two projects in Mayo through the LEADER Programme. The funding is as follows: €135,429 for Darragh McGee, from Newport, to purpose-build a wheelchair accessible boat for angling, tours etc; and €46,000 for Mayo Communities Caring for Water – to deliver a training programme to community/voluntary groups in Mayo on conserving and protecting water/water bodies. Deputy Ring said: "I’m delighted that this funding is being provided through the LEADER Programme. I hope that the venture to provide fully wheelchair accessible angling is a huge success for the promoter. It is innovative and inclusive and I wish him every success. On the conservation project, this training programme is timely as we all recognise how important our water resources are."

Dillon welcomes announcement of new student rental protections

Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon has welcomed the announcement of new student rental protections. Under the Residential Tenancies (No 2) Bill 2021 any upfront payment upon the commencement of a tenancy will be restricted to a total value that does not exceed two months’ rent ie a deposit and one month rent in advance. Deputy Dillon said: "This restriction will apply to all tenancies including for students residing in student specific accommodation. A student can make a larger upfront payment if they so wish, by way of an opt-out option, but they cannot be forced to do so." The Bill also provides that the notice period to be given by students in respect of student specific accommodation will be limited to a maximum 28 days’ notice.

Eighth detection of pesticides in Newport water supply in two years
