Crew members of Achill RNLI honoured at retirement function

Achill RNLI hosted a function in Johnny Pattens, Dereens, recently to honour four crew members who stepped down from lifeboat service – Paddy Kilbane, Cloughmore, Robert Gogan, Dereens, Patrick English, Cashel and Bernard Briody, Polranny. Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM), Tom Honeyman, paid tribute to the four men for their commitment, selfless and generous sacrifice of their free time as RNLI volunteers. Each member received a commemorative plaque and certificate in recognition of services to Achill Island Lifeboat Station. The former LOM, Bob Kingston and the former DLA, Anthony Gielty, made the presentations.

Westport area councillors welcomed the news that breakwater type pontoons are to be installed at Rosmoney Pier. The pontoons will be installed off the northwest corner of the existing pier at Rosmoney and will be held in place by steel circular hollow section piles and accessed from the pier by means of an access walkway.
Councillor John O’Malley welcomed the news, stating that island inhabitants particularly have wanted this for some time. Councillors Margaret Adams, Austin Francis O’Malley, and Peter Flynn concurred.

A Galway man who stole two purses from a back office of a shop on Christmas Eve was handed a 12 month prison sentence with the last three months suspended in Castlebar District Court on Tuesday this week. Martin McDonagh, of 64 Corrib Park, Newcastle, Co Galway pleaded guilty to the charges in court. The court was told that McDonagh went into the back room of Daly’s Newsagent at the Tesco shopping centre in Claremorris on December 24 2011 at 2.35pm and stole two purses from two handbags from the room. The gardai were called and Garda Brandley attended the scene and was shown CCTV footage which clearly showed McDonagh taking the purses from the handbags and putting them inside his trousers and making his exit from the shop.
