Westport to celebrate ‘best place to live’ title

A celebration day will be held in Westport House following Westport’s winning of The Irish Times Best Place to Live in Ireland competition. The event will take place on September 9 on the lawn of Westport House.

Town clerk Anne Moore said at a Westport JPC meeting on Monday that all community groups are invited to take part on the day. There will also be a heritage day element, a mini horse show, and sports fun day.

Manchester joins forces with north Mayo for Gathering project

Manchester's newly formed Manchester-Mayo Tourism and Business group have joined forces with tourism groups in and around Ballina to stage a special festival for the 2013 Gathering project called the 'Mayo-North Gathering'. The proposed festival was launched in Attymass at the Father Peyton Centre yesterday (Thursday). It will be part of the Manchester-Mayo Gathering which will have festival hubs in Ballina and Attymass, but it is hoped that other parishes and surrounding towns will get involved in the initiative which hopes to boost tourism all over the north Mayo area.

Four AIB branches to close in Mayo

AIB is to close four branches in Mayo, a move which has received widespread criticism. The branches are located in Charlestown, Belmullet, Kiltimagh, and Ballyhaunis and they will cease trading on October 26 next.

National Heritage Week looking for county ambassador volunteers

The Heritage Council, coordinator of National Heritage Week (August 18 to 26), has issued a call for people to get involved and promote Heritage Week in Mayo by becoming a county ambassador. The Heritage Council ‘County Ambassador Volunteer Programme’ seeks to recruit volunteers in every county. Located in the local Tourism Information Office throughout the week, the role of the county ambassador will be to provide tourists with information on what is happening in the local area as part of National Heritage Week.

Westport branch of Permanent TSB to close as part of restructuring

Staff at the Westport branch of Permanent TSB have been informed of the branches closure as part of the bank’s restructuring process. A total of 16 branches out of the current 92 will shut down nationwide. This closure will have repercussions for approximately eight staff employed at the bank, which is located on Bridge Street in the town. Two other branches in Mayo — Ballina and Castlebar — will continue to operate.
