PQ response shows public sector jobs substituted by JobBridge cheap labour — Ruane

Speaking this week in response to parliamentary question responses received from the office of the Minister for Social Protection, Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has said has said that real jobs in the public sector are being displaced by cheap labour provided by JobBridge interns. She said “Here in Mayo, 152 cheap interns are being exploited under the JobsBridge scheme in public sector bodies while 44 JobBridge interns are being used by Mayo County Council.”

Claremorris shocked by death of young man

There has been an outpouring of grief in Claremorris this week at the sudden death at the age of 28 of Alan Feeley from a brain haemorrhage. Alan collapsed on Monday evening and was brought to University Hospital Limerick where he died on Tuesday evening. He was a teacher in Doon, County Limerick, for the past five years. Mr Feeley was a well known GAA player with Claremorris and rugby player with Old Crescent in Limerick. He is survived by his parents Willie, a well known GAA referee, his mother Kathleen, and his brothers Liam, Hugh and Donal. He will be laid to rest following his funeral Mass in St Colman’s Church, Claremorris, today at 2.30pm.

Congregation to bring social media enthusiasts to Cong

More than 100 Irish and international social media thinkers are poised to take over Cong village in Mayo on November 30 at a free social media ‘un-conference’ called Congregation.ie. Over the course of one day, all attendees will present on a wide variety of social media topics including research, how-to guides, social business stories, and social media rants. The event will use a variety of venues in the town including coffee shops, exhibition spaces, restaurant, and bars.

Vote needed to approval burial ground bye-laws for the county

The long drawn out saga of putting in place countywide bye-laws for burial grounds in Mayo was finally concluded on Monday when the members of Mayo County Council approved the new bye-laws by a vote of 15-7 after a number of last minute amendments were proposed from the chamber floor.

Coyle welcomes foreshore licence for Belmullet sewerage scheme

Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle has welcomed the granting of a foreshore licence and the appointment of consultants for the new sewerage scheme for Belmullet. Although there have been concerns about the location of the new treatment plant and outflow pipe Councillor Coyle believes that the new modern plant should allay some of the concerns expressed. The new scheme will be of great benefit to the town. Cllr Coyle thanked Minister Michael Ring, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, and Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan for their work in progressing the scheme, he also thanked the staff of Mayo County Council.

Sinn Féin picks team for local elections

The Mayo Sinn Féin Selection Convention held in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, on Sunday last resulted in four candidates being chosen to contest next year's local elections. Cllr Toireasa Ferris chaired the convention which selected Cllr Gerry Murray to contest the Claremorris area, Cllr Rose Conway-Walsh to contest the West Mayo area, Cllr Thérése Ruane to contest the Castlebar area, and John Sheahan to contest the Ballina area.

Mayo child wins HSE and Science Week competition

A pupil from Mayo was one of the competition winners of some 2,000 children from around the country who designed their own superbug posters to highlight the importance of keeping their hands clean and preventing the spread of infections. Setánta O Nuailain, a third class pupil attending Gailscoil na Cruaiche in Westport, won for his poster entitled ‘Iris the Virus’.
