Four picked by Fianna Fáil for West Mayo constituency

At the West Mayo Fianna Fáil selection in Mulranny on Friday night, four candidates were selected by the party to go forward for May's local elections. Westport Town will have two candidates with current town councillor Brendan Mulroy and newcomer Joan Geraghty getting the nod. They will be joined on the ballot by Lousiburgh's Tommy Joe Jennings and Paul McNamara from Achill. The party still have to select one more candidate from the Erris area for this constituency with the Erris convention taking place on Monday, February 17. Fianna Fáil will go into the election with two of their most experienced councillors opting not to stand this time with both Westport based Margaret Adams and Achill's Michéal McNamara deciding not to run.

Storm-damaged Blue Flag beaches can apply for dispensation

Despite the recent destruction caused to the coastline in Mayo, there may be some relief for beaches which it was feared would lose their Blue Flag status this year because the damage caused would not be cleared up by the time they were inspected. An Taisce held its annual Blue Flag conference with local authorities this week to discuss the blue flag and green flag programs for this year.

Mayo man shortlisted for innovation award

Crossmolina man, Dr Eoin Syron was this week shortlisted for the Irish Times Inter Trade Ireland Innovation Awards. Syron and his colleagues in OxyMem, who are based in Athlone, picked up the nomination. OxyMem is a breakthrough technology for wastewater aeration. Up to now the aeration process has relied on forced, or bubble aeration to deliver oxygen to the bacteria that break down the wastewater. OxyMem doesn’t rely on a bubble to deliver oxygen; instead use a gas permeable membrane to deliver oxygen directly to the micro-organisms. This allows OxyMem to deliver oxygen far more efficiently than conventional technologies. OxyMem is typically four times more energy efficient than best in class solution available today.

Mayo man sentenced to life for mother’s murder

A 22-year-old man was this week sentenced to life in prison for murdering his mother at their Islandeady home while he was high on drugs. Celyn Eadon stabbed Nóirín Kelly 19 times on March 9, 2011 and she died at the scene.
