Folklore, song, and verse dedicated to the rebellion of 1798 usually relay the romantic image of an heroic, clandestine, French army joining forces with a willing and equally heroic band of Irish rebels. Bound by a thirst for liberté, égalité and fraternité, the Franco-Irish forces grew in strength as they progressed through the county, bravely securing victories over the might of the British Crown. But one rebel's contemporary account of the Franco-Irish campaign challenges the notion of international solidarity among equals that has dominated the narrative of the events of 1798.

In good weather conditions approximately 1,200 people turned out for the Mayo Operation Transformation walks last Saturday, in Belmullet, Ballina, Ballyhaunis, Claremorris, Castlebar, Claremorris, Kiltimagh, and Westport. Some 230 alone participated in the Castlebar Lough Lannagh event which was attended by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, and Caithaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Al McDonnell.

Every year Mayo County Council offers two bursary awards to artists born or living in Mayo, to enable them to spend two weeks at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig in Monaghan. Each bursary covers the costs for a two-week period, plus the use of a studio if relevant. There are a variety of artist work spaces available including studios, a music room for composers and musicians, a multi-media room and a large rehearsal and performance space.

The financial situation at Bus Éireann has worsened considerably over the past year and its being reported that cuts to the Expressway service are to be cut.

The Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA) project of South West Mayo Development Company welcomes the news of the temporary hosting of 80 Syrian refugees in the west of Ireland in the neighbouring county Roscommon. The Emergency Reception and Orientation Centre in Ballaghdereen will open to temporarily accommodate refugees after their relocation from Greece to Ireland. The residents will receive initial supports, English language and induction to living in Ireland. After a six month period, as expected, these families will be further resettled across Ireland to independent living.

The road safety department of Mayo County Council has launched a new road safety campaign urging drivers 'Don't drive like Mr Bean — drive safely and focus on your driving.' The road safety office has been given the backing of Tiger Aspect Productions which produced the hit show, by allowing it to use the video clip and Mr Bean's image as part of this new campaign.
