The 90th Claremorris Agricultural Show will be opened on Sunday afternoon byJames Drury, star of The Virginian television series. James, who is on his first ever trip to Ireland from Texas, will perform the official opening at 2pm. A film crew from RTE will be at the show to record the event.

Bord Gáis have marked some of the major milestones in the delivery of natural gas to towns in Co Mayo for the first time, with a gala lunch in Westport attended by public representatives, local authority personnel, state agencies, contractors, customers and project staff. Bord Gáis hosted the event to extend its appreciation to all involved in the completion of the Mayo-Galway pipeline and development of the Gaswest programme and to those who shared the vision of bringing gas to 11 towns along the route.

Before outgoing chairman of the Ballinrobe electoral area committee Cllr Damain Ryan handed over the honours to newly appointed chairman Cllr Harry Walsh, he looked ahead to 2009 and the amalgamation of the Claremorris and Ballinrobe areas and feared that issues pertaining to Ballinrobe would get lost in the bigger area.

The Galway Walking Club will hold its 12th annual marathon on the Western Way in Connemara on Saturday August 9. Registration will take place from 7am on the day at the Community Centre, Maum Bridge, Connemara before walkers are transported by bus departing at 8am sharp to the starting point approximately six miles west of Leenane at Our Lady of the Wayside Church.
