Pedestrian crossings cause concern for Castlebar councillors

The difference between controlled and uncontrolled pedestrian crossings caused a bit of controversy at Castlebar Town Council’s monthly meeting. Independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne brought up the issue because of a report that was circulated to the members which outlined a number of pedestrian crossings which had been installed in the town. “In relation to pedestrian crossings, I don’t know where any of these are in the town. I can’t see them anywhere.”

A drunk man who stripped off and took up a boxing pose when approached by gardaí was fined €500 at Claremorris District Court (sitting in Kiltimagh) this week. Kieran Prendergast, 22 Aisling Drive, Ballyhaunis, pleaded guilty to a section six public order offence in court. Garda Peter Sarsfield told the court that at 1.12am on August 8 2008 he found the defendant at the back of the Square, Claremorris, where he was intoxicated and roaring and shouting. When he approached Prendergast the defendent stripped off and took up a boxing pose, after which Garda Sarsfield arrested him.

Four transition year students from St Gerald’s College, Castlebar, are trying to race to the top in Ireland in the F1 Schools competition. The team of Keith Derrig, Darren Brogen, Micheál Healy, and Niall McCormick are hoping to better the performance of last year’s team from the school who got to the national finals and hopefully take a prize this time around. Under the watchful eye of their teacher John Bones the four students have been hard at work on their project since October.

Castlebar Town Councillors criticised the revolving door of superintendents that have been stationed in the county town over the past number of years. Fianna Fáil Cllr Aidan Crowley informed the meeting that Supt Eugene Brennan ,who had been stationed in Castlebar for the past year and half, was transferred to Ardee, Co Louth on December 30 last.

Recent census figures in Co Mayo have indicated a substantial reduction in population figures in parts of our county, considering the fact that Mayo County Council has built substantial housing schemes in most towns and villages and considering the increase in private housing development undertaken during the Celtic Tiger period in the county.
