Mayo County Council and the Mayo County Development Board have received three grants from the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources under the BenefIT scheme. This funding will allow for the further roll-out of supports to communities to provide technology training and equipment.

Exhibition and poetry events in Westport

A group exhibition at the Sea, Sky Shore Gallery, James Street, Westport, featuring work made by the following artists at Custom House Studios during 2008; Cecilia Bullo, Breda Burns, Nick Devaney, Pam Gray, Christina Heraty, Niall McCormack, Sinead Wall, Ian Wieczorek, and Katja Wittmer will be opened by Councillor Margaret Adams, chairperson of Custom House Studios, on Thursday January 29 at 6pm. Amalgamation sees Fianna Fáil establish new cumann in Castlebar

The Fianna Fáil party in Castlebar saw the establishment of a new cumann in the town this week. On Monday evening a new Castlebar Fianna Fáil cumann was established when the Mícheál Ó Moráin and the Johnny Jordan cumainn amalgamated at a meeting in the Welcome Inn Hotel. But the amalgamation still leaves the Castlebar town cumann as a separate entity.

Ballinrobe area councillor outlines the answer to courthouse safety issues

A county councillor in south Mayo has called on the court service to visit the Ballinrobe court house and point out the reasons why the court sittings have been ‘temporarily’ moved to Castlebar.

Today (Friday) sees the first sitting of Ballinrobe District Court in Castlebar and Cllr Patsy O’Brien has written to the court service asking them to meet with representatives of the Ballinrobe Community Development Association, local councillors, and Oireachtas members to explain their recent decision.

Jail sentence for man who wielded knife

A three-month jail sentence was imposed on a man with previous convictions at Castlebar District Court this week after he brandished a kitchen knife at a man at an apartment block in Westport. Two men who also faced trespassing charges in connection to the same case appeared before Judge Mary Devins.

Up to 200 “boy racers” were travelling around Galway city last August in convoys and gathering in car parks to show off their skills and their wanton disregard for their safety and the safety of others and there was a Mayo man at the centre of them, a court heard this week.
