Mayo County Council sets out housing plan

Mayo County Council outlined their housing programme for the coming year to the members of the Housing SPC this week. However, a lot of the planned work depends on the size of the grants received from central government. Most of the work that is planned is in refurbishment programs outlined for 14 different areas around the county. Cllr Eddie Staunton asked if refurbishment works were going to go ahead this year, to which he was told by Mr Paul Benson, for Mayo County Council: “It is a wish list, areas we have identified that works could be done. We have been in discussions with the department but it all depends on what funding comes down. Then we can set out a plan as to the estates and areas we will do. We do not want to get people’s hopes up and then let them down. It all depends on the funds we get.”

Mayo's vices worth €15,637 reveals ‘Give It Up For Trocaire’

People from Mayo have weird and wonderful vices valued at €15,637, Trocaire revealed this week. The charity released the figures, which reflect sponsorship raised for ‘Give It Up For Trocaire’ last year, as it launched its 2011 campaign. Trocaire is challenging people to give up something they love, their greatest temptations, or their worst habits, on March 4 to raise money to change people's lives in the developing world. And from the amount raised by Mayo folk last year, there are certainly plenty of vices to be given up in the county.

One bag carry-on policy will not fly, says Higgins

Jim Higgins MEP has asked the European Commission to examine a low cost airline policy which is having an adverse affect. “Some low cost carriers restrict each passenger to just one carry-on item or else they face a fine. It is an issue of huge concern for the entire duty free and travel retail industry with obvious consequences for sales at airports,” said Mr Higgins.

Since November 2009, schools in Westport have been quietly participating in WWW. Most schools in Westport were working towards their Green Flag for Travel, as part of An Taisce’s green schools programme.

Disability excellence award for Ballina Civic Offices

The Mayo County Council received an award last week from the National Disability Authority (NDA) that recognises the excellence level of achievement reached by Ballina Civic Offices in integrating accessibility into the provision of services to the public. The Excellence through Accessibility (EtA) Awards were held at the Department of Education and Skills in Dublin. The integration of accessibility into the design and provision of services enables people with disabilities access to public services with ease.
