Being the presumptive next toaiseach brings a lot of baggage with it and one of those bags landed in force in Castlebar on Wednesday morning. The normally low key affair of handing in your official nomination paper to the county register Fintan Murphy took place under the glare and scrutiny of the national media. It is a long way time when Kenny first handed in his nomination paper back in the autumn of 1975. At 11.10am after all the paperwork was checked and validated by returning officer Fintan Murphy it was done and dusted and Enda Kenny became the 11th nominee to be put on the ballot paper in Mayo. A little over six minutes later, he was joined by his three constituency colleagues, Michael Ring, John O’Mahony, and Michelle Mulherin as the party looks to claim an historic four seats in the county.

€500k bill to fix damage to water services

The Mayo County Council was left with a €500,000 bill for repair works to water and sewerage systems in the county following the severe weather over the Christmas period. The extent of the work the council had to do in emergency repairs and the costs involved was revealed at a Water Supply and Sewerage SPC this week, by Conrad Harley, acting senior engineer with Mayo County Council.

In memory of Nan Monaghan 1934-2011

It is told that the then Nan Denning was in a world of her own, singing away as she made her way down McHale Road, Castlebar, at the ripe old age of 14, when she was overheard by Tony O’Grady from Manulla. He enquired if Nan would sing in his band which comprised John Lally on saxophone, Toddy Buckley from Knockthomas on drums, Gerald Ralph from Moneen on drums, and Tony himself on accordion. Nan’s first gig was at the Eclipse Ballroom in Ballyhaunis with her opening number “Buttons & Bows”. From there started a long and talented singing career which brought Nan from the dance halls of Mayo to the Castlebar pantomime stage.
