Mayo barrister Lisa Chambers has been elected as vice president of Fianna Fáil. The 25-year-old from Castlebar, who was a Fianna Fáil candidate in Mayo in the last General Election, was elected by delegates at the party’s Ard Fheis in the RDS in Dublin last weekend.

Do you know an outstanding young person?

Nominations to identify Outstanding Young Persons in Mayo are now being sought as part of a competition currently being run by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Mayo, in association with the Mayo Advertiser and AIB.

The Outstanding Young Person of the year competition is a drive to identify young people aged 18-40 for their dynamism and enthusiasm in their fields.

County Manager appeals for household charge payment to retain public services

Mayo county manager, Peter Hynes, has called on people to pay the €100 household charge for the maintenance of essential public services.

Mr Hynes stated: “The €100 household charge is targeted to provide the finance for the local government fund which will in 2012 be worth €27.8m. The collection of the charge is critical to enable Mayo County Council to continue to provide essential services including roads, water, housing, parks, libraries, and our arts programme.”

Mayo General to receive state of the art radiology system - O’Mahony

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, John O’Mahony, has welcomed news that Mayo General Hospital will receive a new, state of the art electronic radiology system. The announcement is part of the HSE’s NIMIS project which is investing over €40m installing new radiology systems in selected hospitals nationally.

Durcan calls for contractors to be brought in

Independent councillor Frank Durcan had a notice of motion at this week’s meeting of Mayo County Council calling on the council to put notice of motion works out to tender rather than have the work carried out in-house by council staff. Each councillor is given a set amount of money each year under the notice of motion heading which allows them to earmark the money toward certain works they want done by the council. However Cllr Durcan told the meeting that the councillors haven’t been getting value for money on these projects as they normally always get completed at the tail end of the year when the weather is bad and it takes longer and therefore costs more to do.

Nine months in prison for man with numerous previous convictions

A Ballinlough man with 21 pervious convictions was sentenced to a total of nine months in prison after he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and the unauthorised taking of a vehicle.

Fifty six days in prison for Angolan refugee

An Angolan refugee who was caught driving while disqualified was sentenced to a total of 56 days in prison at Ballyhaunis District Court this week. Sgt Kieran McNicholas told the court that at 2.40am on September 10 2011 he was on duty on Clare Street, Ballyhaunis, when he saw a car come on to the street at speed and continue on through the town. He set off in pursuit of the car and pulled it over at Abbey Street. The car was being driven by Franciso Salvador, 14 Old Convent, Ballyhaunis. He demanded the production of Salvador’s licence and insurance within 10 days which he failed to do. Following up on the investigation, Sgt McNicholas discovered that Francisco was serving a driving ban when he stopped him.
