Westport town councillor Christy Hyland has hit out at how the council is dealing with antisocial behaviour in local authority houses in the town. At the town council meeting last Thursday, Cllr Hyland said: ‘This is my fifth time bringing up anti-social behaviour.”

Mayo thief gets suspended sentence and fine for pharmacy theft

A 62-year-old Mayo woman who had clocked up 45 previous convictions for theft related offences, received a fine and a five month suspended sentence for a theft committed at a Galway pharmacy just two days after receiving a suspended sentence in another court.

Thousands to make the long pilgrimage to Croke Park on Sunday

This summer the two RNLI lifeboat stations in Mayo launched their lifeboats seven times. Achill Island lifeboat crew launched their all weather lifeboat four times, while Ballyglass RNLI were called out three times.

Tractors are not trucks MEP Jim Higgins tells EU Commission

MEP Jim Higgins has hit out at EU plans to force farmers, who own tractors capable of doing speeds of more than 40km/h, to do a vehicle test in the same way that trucks are presently tested.

Speaking at the European Parliament in Brussels, MEP Higgins said: “I have made road safety a key priority, and while I welcome some of the proposals, I made absolutely clear to Commissioner Kallas that I would not support increased red tape for farmers. Tractors should not be treated as trucks. To do this, will mean increased costs and paperwork for farmers. The proposal is off the wall.”

Democrats abroad to hold voter registration drive

Ahead of this year’s hotly contested US presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, the West of Ireland Chapter of Democrats Abroad Ireland will hold a non-partisan voter registration drive tomorrow, September 22, from 10am to 3pm on Shop Street adjacent to the outdoor market at St Nicholas Church. A table will be staffed by volunteers who will assist all American citizens in Galway and the west to vote in November’s election.

The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, has announced that the Children's Referendum will be held on Saturday November 10; only the second time that a referendum will be held on a Saturday, the other one was the second referendum on the Nice Treaty, which was held on Saturday October 19 2002.
