Ballina councillors adjourn budget meeting for a week

The elected members of Ballina Town Council adjourned their annual budget meeting this week. The members agreed to meet again at 6pm before their annual monthly meeting which is due to take place next Wednesday, January 23.

The three town councils in Mayo faced into what will possibly be their last budgets over the past two weeks. However at both the Castlebar Town Council and Ballina Town Council budget meetings the issue of starting the review of the towns’ development plans and the costs associated with them has caused a lot of debate this week.

In what could possibly be their final budget the members of Castlebar Town Council voted to reduce the commercial rate by one per cent for the coming year. The members held their annual budget meeting on Tuesday afternoon and following a two hour debate they were able to agree the budget for 2013. The commercial new rate for the town will now be 70.23 in the euro, down from 70.94 last year.

The installation of permanent Christmas lights on the trees in The Mall in Castlebar will continue this year. Last year saw one side of The Mall, the side facing the Courthouse completed. At this week’s budget meeting of Castlebar Town Council it was revealed that the council plan to continue that work along the Imperial Hotel side of the Mall this year and it will be paid for out of the €50,000 budget put aside for Christmas lights.

The Castlebar Tourist Office, which is operated by Castlebar Chamber of Commerce volunteers and various employment schemes in the town, will receive €5,000 funding this year from the Town Council. Cllr Ger Deere told the budget meeting of Castlebar Town Council, “This is an invaluable service that has worked very well over the last year and we should continue to support it. I just popped in there before this meeting and they had 16 people call in already today and it’s a cold wet Tuesday in January.”

The Linenhall Arts Centre will retain €40,000 funding from Castlebar Town Council. With the budget of the council reduced again this year, there were some fears that the council would not be able to maintain the funding at that level. However the councillors had previously passed a resolution in the council to fund it and they stuck with it at the budget meeting.

Due to the closing of six Garda stations in Mayo at the end of the month there will be new policing changes imposed from January 30. The six stations to close in Mayo as approved by the Minister for Justice and Equality are: Blacksod, Ballycastle, Ballyglass, Ballyvary, Hollymount and Lahardane.
