Ballina councillors keep commercial rates the same

Following their second public meeting and after a number of behind closed doors sessions the elected members of Ballina Town Council finalised their budget for 2013 on Wednesday evening. Following the protracted discussions, the members agreed to keep the commercial rate the same in the town as the previous year at a figure of €64.52 in the euro, but made a number of changes to the spending priorities in the budget.

Ballina looks to curb the blight of poor signage

Ballina Town Council will be putting new draft signage bye-laws out to public consultation in the next few weeks. Town architect, Kevin Keegan gave a presentation to the members of the council on the issue of poor and unattractive signage in the town and its surrounds and the impression it gives. Mr Keegan told the meeting that the council had problems in trying to get certain businesses to comply with the council’s requests to remove or replace poor signage as there were no bye-laws in place.

Burglaries up, but thefts and public order down in Castlebar

Inspector Joe McKenna told the January meeting of the Castlebar Joint Policing Committee that good work was being done on prosecuting criminals in the town. At Monday’s meeting the Garda Inspector said, “I was prosecuting cases in Castlebar last Wednesday and it was a full day’s sitting. Good work is being done here in the town, Castlebar is a big town.”

Anti-social policy should allow for expulsion from local authority houses

Councillor Myles Staunton made a proposal at the Westport Joint Policing Committee meeting this week that a provision should be put in the Anti-Social policy document which will enable the “immediate expulsion from local authority housing” of anyone who lives in social housing and who allows someone who is involved in anti-social behaviour to stay with them.

CCTV application for Westport submitted to Garda HQ

An application for CCTV for Westport has been forwarded to Garda Headquarters. According to Superintendent Aiden Foley the application has been sent and he hopes to be called to present to the Garda CCTV committee at the next quarterly meeting. However, the superintendent could not give the town’s JPC meeting a date when CCTV would be up and running.
