With Ireland just a few weeks into its EU presidency, a new European Movement/Red C poll has shown that 86 per cent of those polled in the North West EU Constituency believe that Ireland should remain part of the EU, with 83 per cent believing that Ireland has benefited overall from its membership of the EU.

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Deputy Michelle Mulherin, has said that the Government’s new Action Plan on Bullying will help to tackle the scourge of bullying in schools across Mayo. Five hundred thousand euro has been ring-fenced to support the implementation of the plan this year, which will include a campaign on cyber bullying and the development of national anti-bullying procedures for all schools.

Mayo Fianna Fáil Deputy Dara Calleary has slammed the Government’s decision to shut down six Garda stations in Mayo. Before a Fianna Fail motion was debated in the Dáil, the deputy had urged Fine Gael to reverse its “dangerous decision”, however on Wednesday evening—following an adjournment of the Dáil for several hours in order to allow TDs to attend the State funeral of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe—the motion was rejected by the Dáil.

Road fatality figures released by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have revealed that there was a 43 per cent reduction in road deaths in Mayo during the Government Road Safety Strategy 2007 to 2012 when compared to the period of the previous strategy which ran from 2004 to 2006. These figures were announced as the RSA prepares to finalise the next Road Safety Strategy which will span an eight year period from 2013 to 2020.
