Burglaries up, but thefts and public order down in Castlebar

Inspector Joe McKenna told the January meeting of the Castlebar Joint Policing Committee that good work was being done on prosecuting criminals in the town. At Monday’s meeting the Garda Inspector said, “I was prosecuting cases in Castlebar last Wednesday and it was a full day’s sitting. Good work is being done here in the town, Castlebar is a big town.”

Without being able to reveal the exact figures for Castlebar, Inspector McKenna told the meeting that there had been a rise in burglaries in the town, but there was a reduction in thefts from shops and in the number of public order incidents in Castlebar. Inspector McKenna reminded the meeting that the Gardai had to work within the law when prosecuting people and had to follow due process in all investigations. He also told the meeting that gardaí had noticed an increase in thefts by people looking to steal the float from the cash register, and advised business owners not to leave a float on the premises if possible.
