The Quay School in Westport was taken totally by surprise last week when a short video recording they made as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge was viewed almost 8,000 times.

The sixth class pupils from Gortskehy NS had a once in a lifetime trip over Easter when they visited France as part of their EU Comenius programme. The children visited the Eiffel Tower and magnificent Palace of Versailles. They were welcomed by the Irish ambassador to France Mr Paul Kavanagh and his wife Rosaleen before being given a tour of the Irish embassy by Ms Megan Laffan, Cultural Attache. They also walked the famous Champs Elysees and saw Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe and the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, before leaving for Strasbourg by TGV.

Mayo mental health services has seen a reduction of 120 nurses from 260 to 140 since the introduction of the Croke Park Agreement three years ago, according to figures obtained by independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne. The Castlebar town councillor has hit out at An Taoiseach Enda Kenny for announcing only 14 new mental health posts in the county this week when “more than 114 are needed”.

A long standing cash and carry business was extensively damaged by a fire that broke out on Monday night and took a number of hours to get under control. The fire occurred at Tuffy’s Cash and Carry in Bohernasup and caused a number of roads to be closed around the town as five units from Ballina, Enniscrone, and Crossmolina fire stations battled the blaze. With fumes and smoke emanating from the building for a long time, nearby residents were advised to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed. Tuffy’s Cash and Carry has been in operation for long number of years and employed 30 people in the town on a full and part time basis.

In a discussion on the take over of estates and the local property tax at this week’s Ballina Town Council meeting, Fianna Fáil councillor Johnny O’Malley hit out at the self regulation of planning that he feels has contributed to the number of unfinished estates in the country.

The winners of the colouring and naming competition sponsored by Greenhand Lawn and Treatment Services which featured in the Mayo Advertiser on March 15 are: Alice Rattigan of Claremorris who won the colouring competition, and joint winners of picking the character name are Mary Kilbane, Achill, and Ruairi Kilbane, Ballybrit, Galway, who both chose the name Sidney.

Members of the public can expect to pay a bit less for parking in Castlebar in the coming weeks with the adoption of new parking bye-laws in the town by the town council this week. The new bye-laws will see monthly parking permits for the new Pavilion Road car park and the Spencer Street car park available to the public for €10 a month. Parking in both those car parks can also be paid for at a daily rate of €2.
