Murray lashes out at major parties over area boundary proposals

Sinn Féin county councillor Gerry Murray has expressed concern about the future of Mayo County Council’s local area office in Swinford following proposals by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael that would see the Swinford Office losing a large chunk of it’s hinterland to either Castlebar or Claremorris. Cllr Murray said the proposals made to the local boundary commission by both parties seriously compromise and undermine the future of local government in Swinford and may ultimately lead to the closure of the local area office.

17 per cent drop in new car registrations

According to figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry through their statistics website www.beepbeep.ie/stats new car registrations in Mayo are down by 17.6 per cent on the same time period last year. Overall nationally the new car sales figures were down 14 per cent on the same time last year.

Over the course of the week employment organisations, jobseekers and employers will showcase employment for people with disabilities through a variety of themed events, seminars and a national publicity campaign to raise awareness of employment for people with disabilities throughout the week.

Ó’Cuív demands radical action to tackle social welfare delays

Fianna Fáil Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív has called on the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton to immediately address the inordinate delays in processing applications and appeals for a range of social welfare payments. According to figures received by Dep Ó’Cuív, nearly 30,000 applications for a range of payments have not been processed within three months. This includes 6,782 applicants for the Carer’s Allowance, 4,965 new claimants for the Family Income Supplement, 3,408 applications for the Job Seekers Allowance as well as 2,876 applicants for Disability Allowance.

Lands used to access Royal Theatre are not owned by the receivers court hears

At Castlebar District Court this week it was heard that a section of land which is adjacent to the Royal Theatre, which is used by patrons to access the hotel, is in fact in private ownership and was never owned by Diorama Ltd—the director of which is Pat Jennings—which have been taken over by receivers. It was found that this piece of land is not therefore in control of the receivers.
