Parents in Ballina and Westport look for Educate Together patronage

This week saw the results of a the Primary School Patronage Survey in 38 areas across the country. Two of the 38 areas surveyed were in Mayo — Ballina and Westport. The survey results showed the majority of parents in Ballina and Westport seeking alternate provision of school patronage indicated Educate Together as their first preference.

As road deaths rise Mayo clerics bless the roads on Easter Sunday

Clerics in Co Mayo blessed the county’s roads in a novel ceremony aimed at reducing the number of people who die in traffic accidents each year over the Easter weekend. The campaign comes after Gardaí expressed serious concern over a rise in road deaths in the west over the past two years which runs contrary to the downward trend nationally. Single vehicle crashes involving male drivers in random locations constituted the largest number of fatalities in the region last year, while overall deaths in the region had risen from a low in 2010. Speeding in 80km/h and 100km/h zones had been identified as a major factor in fatalities in the west.

No decision on closure of Ballyhaunis Courthouse, says Higgins

Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins this week said he has been informed by the Court Service that no decision has been taken in relation to the closure of Ballyhaunis Courthouse. Mr Higgins had taken the matter up with the Court Service at the request of Ballyhaunis Chamber.

Weir welcomes announcement of suicide prevention posts

Five million euro is to be spent regionally in 2013 to address the issue of suicide prevention. The money will go towards the funding of resource officers for suicide prevention, self-harm liaison nurses in hospital emergency departments and local suicide prevention initiatives.

Road deaths up by a third in first three months of this year

Forty nine people lost their lives on Irish roads in the first three months of 2013 compared to 33 over the same period last year, and as a result Jim Higgins MEP for Ireland North West has urged the Gardaí and the Minister for Transport to work with the RSA to increase the number of visible checks on the nation’s roads.

MEP Higgins made his comments in light of new figures which show that the number of people who lost their lives on the country’s roads has increased by 16 in the first three months of 2013 compared to the same period last year.
