udge Mary Devins this week adjourned a case for her consideration until July 16 in what she described as “I think this is the first case a dog is the main witness.” Judge Devins this week heard a drink driving case brought against Joe McNamara, Burrish, Irishtown who was found in a Jeep in a ditch on October 7 2012 at Lugalisheen South, Ballindine.

Machinery driver convicted of drink driving

A 25-year-old Claremorris man who pleaded guilty to drink driving was given a three year ban from driving in Castlebar District Court this week. Patrick Moran, Brize, Claremorris was stopped at on December 27 2011 after been seen driving at speed on Convent Road, Claremorris by gardai. He was observed breaking both the median line and hard shoulder by gardai before they pulled him over. When arrested he was brought to Claremorris Garda Station where he gave a blood sample, which returned a reading of 191mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Mayo nurses’ contracts renewed at last minute after they refused lower pay

Eleven general staff nurses in Mayo General Hospital, who were facing the prospect of being unemployed at the end of this week, have had their contracts renewed for a three month period after the nurses boycotted the offering of a graduate programme which would lead to an immediate 20 per cent decrease in their wages.

County manager shares Flynn’s worries over pension payments

Westport based Fine Gael Cllr Peter Flynn expressed his concern over the amount of money that is being paid by Mayo County Council to cover the cost of pensions. Cllr Flynn was commenting on the annual financial statement of the council which was presented to the elected members by Peter Duggan, head of finance for Mayo County Council, at the May meeting of the council.

Strategic study on future of Knock airport to report by September

The news that consultants will have to be employed to carry out a strategic study of Knock airport and its future direction, which will not be ready until September, was greeted with dismay from the opposition benches at the May meeting of Mayo County Council. County manager Peter Hynes, who is also a board member of the airport, gave the elected members an update on the work of the strategic review body of the airport which has met twice in the recent past to plan its future. Mr Hynes told the meeting, “It’s best to have the right plan in place, not the quickest plan”. He said that consultants were close to being employed to carry out the survey, which will have to be part funded by the council along with the other interested bodies involved with the airport.

Mixed reaction to Mayo General’s inclusion in new hospital group

Mayo General Hospital is to be included in one of six new hospital groups being formed. The Castlebar facility will form part of a new hospital group in the west and northwest along with University Hospital Galway, Merlin Park, Sligo Regional Hospital, Letterkenny General Hospital, Portiuncula Hospital, and Roscommon County Hospital.
