Ballina Town Council approves €20k funding for Ballina Chamber

At the May meeting of Ballina Town Council the elected members agreed to give €20,000 funding to Ballina Chamber of Commerce for the projects. The funding will be split equally over four different projects, the tourist office, the Halloween festival, the Christmas festival, and for promotions of Ballina. There was full backing from all the members of the council for the work being carried out by the chamber on these projects, in particular the tourist office, which all nine elected members said had been a huge success since the chamber took over the running of it.

Ballina councillors give the go ahead for new bye-laws on signs

After putting draft signage bye-laws out for public consultation and no member of the public making any submission on the new bye-laws, the elected members of Ballina Town Council gave the local authority the go-ahead this week. The new bye-laws will restrict the size and type of material used in signage around the town and also force those who are looking to put up temporary signs to get a permit from the town council or face a fine for not doing so. All of the members agreed that it was a start to try to curb illegal and unsightly signs in the town and welcomed the progress the bye-laws had made.

Call for support for Sacred Heart Hospital

Organisers of the community rally to save the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar from closure have called for a huge turnout for the evening of Monday next, May 27. The rally has been called to highlight the danger of the hospital closing on June 30, 2015, unless remedial works, which will take two years to complete, are not started immediately.

Mayo Centra Stores help raise over half a million for Action Breast Cancer

Fifteen Centra stores in Mayo have helped raise more than €500,000 for the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer in 2012. This is Centra’s third year providing nationwide support to the charity with all funds raised going to provide information, advice and support services for women with breast cancer in Ireland.

Mulherin proposes Constitutional Convention debate on Dáil representation

Fine Gael TD for Mayo and member of the Constitutional Convention, Michelle Mulherin, has proposed that the Constitutional Convention should examine Article 16 of the Constitution which states that the number of TDs in each constituency should be directly related to the number of people living in the constituency. Deputy Mulherin has argued that other considerations such as geography and access to services should be considered when deciding on how many TDs each constituency should have.

Mayo businesses contribute some €1.09 million to local charities and community groups

In Mayo in 2012, local businesses donated a total of €1,093,638 in cash and in kind donations to local charities and community groups. Some 990 hours were volunteered by local employees and some 185 community partnerships were supported by 19 companies.

Defendant claims garda refused to call his solicitor

Judge Mary Devins adjourned a case for consideration, following claims by a defendant that a garda refused to call his solicitor when he asked for him after the defendant was arrested for drink driving and dangerous driving. Mr Damien Walsh, High Street, Kilkelly, made the claim while contesting the case against him in Castlebar District Court. In his evidence to the court, Walsh said that he asked the member in charge in Claremorris Garda Station, Garda Liam Hynes, to call his solicitor and the garda picked up the phone asked him who to call, when Walsh told him it was John O’Dwyer, Garda Hynes hung up the phone and said “that man will be asleep by now.”
