The deadline is looming to register your business for the Mayo Advertiser’s Best of Mayo Awards. You can still register at www.bestofmayo.com before midnight on Monday July 29. Voting opens on Friday August 2 and closes on Monday September 2.

Barrett welcomes moves by OPW to control overgrown lake weeds

The Office of Public Works (OPW) is due to commence works at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, at the end of this week to tackle the problem of weed growth in the lake. The news has been welcomed locally by Labour councillor Harry Barrett who had made representations to the authority to have the works expedited.

Coroner for Mayo east condemns closure of courthouses

Mr Patrick O’Connor, coroner for Mayo East, this week hit out at the decision of the Court Service to close both of the courthouses in Swinford and Ballyhaunis. In a statement made at inquests being held in Swinford on Tuesday this week, Mr O’Connor said that the decision is a “regrettable, retrograde, reactionary decision that will, in the long-term have profound consequences for County Mayo. Not only will there be job losses in solicitors’ offices but there will be a serious economic effect on the entire east Mayo region of which Swinford has been the principal market town for more than 200 years.”
