Midwest Radio signs 10-year broadcasting deal

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) this week signed a ten-year contract for a sound broadcasting service for the County Mayo franchise area, operated by Midwest Radio.

Speaking at the contract signings, Bob Collins, chairperson of the BAI, said: “We are delighted to sign the contract today with Midwest Radio. This local service has provided a unique and distinct voice in Mayo and today’s signings secure the continuation of Midwest Radio as a value radio service into the future. The BAI wishes Midwest Radio continued success in serving its audiences over the duration of the next contract period.”

Hoax calls can cost lives – O’Mahony

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony, has highlighted what he has described as ‘an unacceptable practice of people making hoax phone calls to the Irish Coast Guard. Deputy O’Mahony, who is chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications, said that last year alone there were 328 hoax calls received.

MEP Higgins meets with Hogan on Leader programme

Speaking after his meeting with Minister for Environment, Phil Hogan, Jim Higgins MEP described himself as “disappointed that the Minister seems determined to implement the ‘alignment’ report by Christmas.” Higgins went on to say: “I am still convinced that the proposed changes to the Leader programme are unnecessary and counterproductive but I take solace in certain compromises reached with the Minister. Crucially Minister Hogan has guaranteed that Leader funds will be ring-fenced, so we will not see a situation where Leader funds will be at the disposal of the County Managers or redirected into other areas.”

Delegates on the evening selected Matt Carty as the Sinn Féin candidate in the EU elections in the north-western constituency.
