A young woman was seriously injured after she struck rocks on Wednesday afternoon while cliff-diving at Maxwell’s Leap at Old Head, near Louisburgh. The Achill Island Lifeboat was dispatched to the scene at 4pm and used the ‘daughter boat’ from the rocks below the cliff to transfer the woman to the main lifeboat before she was airlifted to Mayo General hospital by the Coast Guard helicopter which was dispatched to the scene from Shannon.

Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has called on councillors to focus on what he has dubbed “the emergency jobs crisis” in Castlebar and has called for an urgent public meeting on the issue. Cllr Barrett made his call in the wake of the ongoing concern regarding the loss of 30 jobs in the Homebase outlet in Castlebar and a spate of recent closures of local businesses.

Supporters making their way to Croke Park for Sunday’s big games may want to leave some extra time for their journey or choose an alternative route, with two major athletics events taking place between Mayo and Croke Park. The annual Longford Marathon is scheduled to start on Sunday morning, with a route that will include the Tarmonbarry to Longford road which will be a main artery to Dublin for Mayo supporters. The marathon will see competitors setting off from Longford between 8.30am and 10am, with an expected finishing time of between 1pm and 4pm for all competitors.
