Well it’s all over now and we’ve all arrived safely in 2011. I for one ended up arriving in the New Year unexpectedly, wasn’t me bloody watch 10 minutes slow; I was even too late to see the fireworks goin’ off on the telly. I know what you’re thinkin’, how come I wasn’t below in Pa’s letting me hair down and helping meself to all them free New Year kisses and hugs from the women like all the other bachelors. I decided to give it a miss this year. Arrah sure it’s the same aul thing year after year, you get fed up of lookin’ at the same aul faces year in, year out, it’s nice to have a few different faces to look at, at Christmas.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has confirmed that serious political reform will still be an important part of Fine Gael's policy for the upcoming general election. A number of months ago, Fine Gael launched its political reform document 'New Politics' containing a number of proposals such as holding a referendum on abolishing Seanad Éireann. Other features included a reduction in the numbers of TDs, making Government more open and transparent, and providing initiatives to empower citizens.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny launched a new website this week aimed at inviting the public to make their views known on the future of Ireland. It has replaced the normal Fine Gael website on a temporary basis in advance of the General Election to maximise the opportunity for individuals to share their views with Fine Gael. According to the party: “This is a vital part of Fine Gael's intentions to use all means of communicating with the public; these include traditional media as well as a new and enhanced digital strategy.”

Despite a number of homes and businesses suffering from frozen pipes in recent days, a water crisis disaster has been averted this Christmas thanks to the work of Mayo County Council staff whose preventative work throughout the year has helped keep water flowing in the pipes.
According to Cllr Blackie Gavin, who also works for Mayo County Council as a plumber, the water situation throughout the county is very serious at the moment with freezing pipes cutting off supplies. However, some good work carried out in response to the deluge of calls received from people last year suffering with water problems has paid off in general terms - and particularly in the county town of Castlebar, he said.
