Government failure is reason for lack of salt — O’Mahony

A failure of epic proportions is how Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony has described the mismanagement by the Government and its agency National Road Authority which was placed in charge to deal with obtaining salt. Salt quantities in the country are diminishing by the day and local authorities have to mix salt and grit to treat the roads. It now appears that no more salt will be in the country until the end of the week, too late for the Christmas shopping season.

Arctic weather in Mayo as temperatures plummet

An Arctic temperature of minus 18 was recorded in Foxford on Sunday night, and temperatures in the county did not rise above freezing during the week. However, Met Éireann has forecast that temperatures are to rise by Christmas Day as rain is expected.

O’Mahony hits out at cut in home help hours

Home help hours in Mayo have been reduced by 40,000 hours in the past three years, according to Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony following information received in a response to a question tabled by him in the Dáil. In 2007 and 2008, Mayo people were receiving 460,000 hours of home help but the figure was reduced by 10,000 hours in 2009. However the most drastic reduction has been in the last 12 months when another 30,000 hours were taken away, leaving just 420,000 hours of home help available to Mayo people.

Cathaoirleach launches second plan for sport and physical activity in Mayo

Mayo Sports Partnership’s second strategic plan for sport and physical activity, Promoting an Active Mayo, was launched by the cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Cllr Michael Burke along with the board of Mayo Sports Partnership and its chairman Henry Kenny at the superbly appointed new Joe Langan Sportshall at Davitt College Castlebar recently. The strategic plan covers the time frame 2010—2014 and forms an integral part of the work of the Sports Partnership. Building on the successful implementation of the first plan 2006-2009 it will guide and focus the work of the sports partnership, outline the partnership’s vision for sport/physical activity in the county, sets down goals and objectives over the next four years, and identifies partners with which such goals and objectives can be achieved. Four strategic themes have been identified in the strategic plan and they are increasing participation, training and education, facilities and amenities and, communication and co-ordination. The strategic plan was the result of a six month process which commenced in April 2010 with extensive consultations undertaken with those with an interest or remit in sports provision in the county.

Kenny warns of problems with digital TV coverage

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has received detailed information from RTÉ networks in respect of the progress being made with digital terrestrial television in County Mayo. SAORVIEW is the name for Ireland's new free-to-air digital TV service and most of the county is already covered by the SAORVIEW service. Despite the majority of the county being already covered by SAORVIEW, many remaining parts will not go live until spring 2011 and some further areas will not even pick up the new service through existing aerials.
