Calleary supports call for fair trade legislation in Ireland

Mayo TD Dara Calleary has called on the Government to introduce fair trade legislation without delay to ensure that farmers and food producers get a fair price for their produce.
The urgent need for laws governing the relationship between retailers and suppliers was highlighted in a Fianna Fáil Private Members motion on agriculture which was passed in the Dáil this week.

Westport dairy farmer Michael Lyons has won the top award in the Connacht Gold Milk Quality Awards. Mr Lyons came top of the class among the 875 milk producers who supplied Connacht Gold in 2010.

Castlebar Fine Gael Senator Paddy Burke took over the office of Cathaoirleach of the 24th Seanad this week. The Mayo Senator will lead the 60-strong house for the duration of the current government’s term. He takes over the chair from Donie Cassidy who was the Cathaoirleach of the last Seanad, during which time Sen Burke held the position of Leas Cathaoirleach. He will be the 14th leader of the Seanad since it was first established in 1922 and possibly the last if the Government goes ahead with plans to abolish the upper house.

Kiltimagh native Mary Davis launched her bid for a nomination to contest the upcoming election for the Presidency of Ireland in Dublin yesterday morning at the National Library of Ireland on Kildare Street. The 56-year-old, who is best known as the person who brought the Special Olympics to Ireland in 2003, will be seeking the backing of four county councils to get her name on the ballot paper for the election later this year.
