Castlebar Town Council this week awarded Commodore Mark Mellett a civic reception. Mellett, who is a native of Rathbawn Road, has risen to the rank of Flag Officer Commanding Naval Service, or as Mayor of Castlebar Cllr Ger Deere described him, “To you and me he’s the man in charge of the Irish Navy”.

Third Dip in the Nip Launched

The third ‘Dip in the Nip’ will take place on a beach in the northwest of Ireland on Saturday June 25. This innovative fundraiser was the brainchild of Sligo woman Máire Garvey, who came up with the idea of a small sponsored all-female skinny dip in 2009 in order to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society.

Gardaí to crack down on cars with tinted windows and loud exhausts

The divisional traffic unit in Mayo has launched an initiative, which is part of a nationwide campaign, in order to deal with vehicles which have loud exhausts and excessively tinted windows. However, gardaí in Mayo are giving motorists in Mayo a grace period of two weeks, until June 15, to rectify these defects.
