Controversial Castlebar Independent councillor Frank Durcan slammed the amount of money that will be spent by Mayo County Council on housing and maintaining the Clarke Collection in Ballina. Under the freedom of information act Cllr Durcan received a copy of the contract entered into by Mayo County Council with Mrs Anne Clarke the widow of the late Jackie Clarke who amassed the collection over a number of years.

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD will be in west Mayo tomorrow (Friday April 16) to officially open the Great Western Greenway from Newport to Mulranny. Also being officially opened is the popular new walking and cycling route through Westport town.

The sacred relics of the French Saint — the Curé of Ars, St John Vianney, who is the patron of parochial clergy will be at Knock Shrine for veneration on Tuesday, April 27. The relics will arrive in Knock at 12pm, when there will be a liturgy of welcome at the Apparition Chapel.

The elected members of Mayo County Council accepted the draft Western River Basin District Management Plan and the Shannon International River Basin District Management plan this week, but with a number of reservations attached to the plans. Fine Gael whip Cllr Joe Mellet proposed the acceptance of the plans, but with the inclusion of the three reservations about the plan. The reservations included that nothing in these plans should supersede the County Development Plan, that they didn’t accept that 31 per cent of pollution in the rivers came from agriculture, and that the plan did nothing to supersede the current EU nitrates directive.

Both Castlebar Town Council and Mayo County Council paid tribute to the late Sean Smyth at their monthly meetings last week. Mr Smyth, who passed away recently, was a former Town Clerk of Castlebar Urban District Council from 1961 to 1968 as it was called at the time, and latterly the CEO of the Mayo County Enterprise Board from it’s inception in 1968 until his retirement in 1993.

Following the Polish air crash tragedy, which resulted in the death of the Polish president, his wife and 95 other people, the Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Myles Staunton has asked the town clerk to set up a book of condolences at the offices of Westport Town Council. The Book of Condolences will be forwarded to the Polish Embassy.
