Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has expressed further disappointment that illegal dumping continues to take place throughout Co Mayo. The Mayo TD recently discovered a site where illegal dumping had taken place in the Pontoon area only metres away from Lough Cullen. He was partaking in a practice cycle to prepare for the Mayo Pink Ribbon Appeal 100km charity cycle due to take place on Saturday, May 1. He has constantly raised the issue of illegal dumping and the negative impact it has on the Irish countryside.

People who book their NCT and have to wait longer than four weeks for the test to be carried out are entitled to a full refund of their test fee. However, Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony has learned that the booking centre that administers the tests does not disclose this information to the public because they themselves are not aware of it, or were not aware of it until Deputy O’Mahony highlighted the issue this week.

A case against a Ballinrobe man who allegedly assaulted an off duty garda in Claremorris was adjourned by Judge Mary Devins after she heard the evidence of the prosecution only. David Sweeny, 4 Bog Road, Ballinrobe, was represented in Claremorris District Court by a solicitor but was not in court himself as he had an illness. Judge Devins put back the case on the list to see if Ms Fiona McAllister, solicitor for Sweeny, could get in contact with him as the case was down to go ahead this week. Ms McAllister was unable to get further instructions from her client and Judge Devins let the case begin.

There are a large number of voluntary organisations around County Mayo and a new six-part documentary radio series entitled Volunteers at the Coal Face highlights the work being done by six groups who rely on volunteers to provide various services for people in the county. The new series will be broadcast on CRCFM (102.9 fm) with the programmes detailing the work being done by Mayo Mountain Rescue, No Name Clubs, RNLI, Order of Malta, Macra na Feirme and Vincent de Paul in bringing their respective services to the people of Mayo.

Sinn Féin has responded critically to Minister John Gormley’s announcement of the introduction of water charges to households in the near future. Belmullet Councillor Rose Conway-Walsh stressed the urgent need for the Government to abandon its plans to impose water charges on ordinary households and in particular their intention, unveiled by the Minister this week, to base the rates on the German model which charges its citizens more for water than any other country in the world.

Concerns about the future of Belmullet Community Hospital were again expressed at a meeting of the Hospital Action Group on Monday evening. Spokesperson for the group, Councillor Rose Conway-Walsh said: “Although the hospital is now operating at an increased level of activity, we are still concerned that the full capacity of the hospital is not being fully utilised.”
