Man gave false name after being stopped by gardaí

A 26-year-old Castlebar man who when stopped for driving without insurance or a driving licence, gave a false name and address, was disqualified from driving for 15 years.

At Castlebar District Court this week it was said that Patrick Slammon, 51 Castle Hill Park, Turlough Road, Castlebar, was stopped driving his car at 3pm in the Curragh, Castlebar, by Garda Peter Flanagan. Slammon gave his name as Paddy Cosgrove from Longford and it took Garda Flanagan a few months to track down the defendant.

Slammon has a number of previous road traffic convictions dating back to 2002, where he had been disqualified from driving and sentenced to prison.

The court heard that the single, unemployed, father of two has a history of alcohol and drug abuse for which he is being treated.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €1,000 for no insurance; disqualified him from driving for 12 years, and also adjourned the case for a community service assessment report to May 19, where if found suitable, Slammon would be sentenced to 150 hours community service in lieu of six months in prison. For not having a driving licence Judge Devins convicted and fined him €150. For giving a false name, the judge adjourned the matter to May 19 for a community service assessment report where if deemed suitable Slammon would be sentenced to 50 hours community service, consecutive, in lieu of one month in prison consecutive.
