Safe Ireland’s new report ‘In just one day’, which took a 24 hour snapshot of domestic violence in the country, revealed that on November 4 2009, Mayo Women’s Support Service gave 21 women and 25 children a variety of vital supports including accommodation, advocacy, information, accompaniments, and help-line calls from Mayo Women’s Support Services.

John Grant of Western Alzheimer’s was singled out for mention at a health conference in Galway last week for promoting a ‘household’ system of care through residential homes catering to small numbers of patients at a time.

More than 170 people have stopped working for Mayo County Council since December 2008, according to Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny. Commenting on figures received in respect of the numbers employed by Mayo County Council from the Environment Minister, John Gormley, Deputy Kenny said they showed that permanent staff in the council has decreased from 1,115 in December 2008 to 1,061 in March 2010. The biggest decrease is in the area of temporary and seasonal staff which has severely decreased from 182 in December 2008 to 65.

Any cut to the minimum wage would create severe hardship for low paid workers and must be resisted, according to Castlebar Sinn Fein councillor Therese Ruane. She said such a move would force more families to rely on supplementary welfare assistance from the State and would have knock on impacts on across the local economy. Cllr Ruane sought support in the matter from her colleagues on Castlebar Town Council at this week’s meeting.

New gardaí will be taking up station in Balla, Ballycastle, Ballindine, and Hollymount in the coming weeks. Deputy O’Mahony has welcomed the appointments, stating that it is vital that people in rural areas have a Garda service from within their own communities.
