More than 170 people have stopped working for Mayo County Council since December 2008, according to Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny. Commenting on figures received in respect of the numbers employed by Mayo County Council from the Environment Minister, John Gormley, Deputy Kenny said they showed that permanent staff in the council has decreased from 1,115 in December 2008 to 1,061 in March 2010. The biggest decrease is in the area of temporary and seasonal staff which has severely decreased from 182 in December 2008 to 65.

The failure of Ross beach in Killala to meet the required EU bathing water standards comes as no surprise according to Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly who said it was a direct result of the failure to provide a sewage treatment in the town. Apart from Ross beach in Killala, there was good news for the vast majority of the beaches in Mayo which were included in the report. There were 15 Mayo beaches in the county tested, with Ross beach being the only one to come in with a poor result. Old Head in Louisburgh had a sufficient water quality status, while the 13 others in many of the tourist hotspots in the county were all found to have a good standard of water quality.

Both the towns of Claremorris and Ballinrobe will offer free parking in the middle of the towns in the coming weeks as part of a three month trial. The county councillors from the areas had been lobbying Mayo County Council for some time now to get some free parking spaces in the towns, to help boost the economy in the south Mayo towns.

A Westport vet has found a way to beat the traffic and the threat of volcanic ash — she is cycling all the way home to Germany. Katrin Hansmann, 28, has just finished a year working as a vet in Westport and is returning to her home town of Schwalmstadt, about 150km north of Frankfurt.

Last Friday a 60-strong international bike ride arrived in Erris to a warm welcome from local campaigners at the Bellanaboy Shell refinery site. The cyclists have ridden 500 miles from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales to Erris. The cyclists joined with local campaigners at the refinery gate and then travelled en masse to the Rossport Solidarity Camp where some 200 people are meeting for the 2010 summer gathering.
