Mayor of Castlebar Town Council Michael Kilcoyne laid down a challenge to Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny to introduce a private member’s bill to enact legislation to regulate head shops in the country. Mayor Kilcoyne led a protest organised by town councillors in Castlebar which protested outside the two head shops in the town last Wednesday. When it was put to him that the protest was outside two premises which were acting inside the law as it stands he said: “I accept they are not breaking any law and we need to highlight the lack of any regulation. We have two government TDs in this constituency and we also have the leader of the opposition who can put down a private member’s bill to force a vote in the Dáil.”

A man who broke into a house belonging to his ex-girlfriend’s new partner where he assaulted the man, was this week given a suspended sentence at Claremorris District Court.
The case, which was previously heard, outlined that on 7am on September 7 2008, Patrick Farragher,43 Barr na hAille, Claremorris broke into the home of David Fitzsimmons where he assaulted Mr Fitzsimmons, causing bruising to his face. Judge Mary Devins adjourned the sentencing for six months on the proviso that Farragher had no contact with the injured party in the meantime.

A man who is now residing in the UK was this week convicted of drink driving at Claremorris District Court.
On June 21 2009, Eamon Purtill, with a listed address at Claremount, Claremorris was stopped at a garda checkpoint where he failed a roadside breath test. A subsequent urine analysis showed 123mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine. The car which the defendant was driving had no NCT, however Purtil had it booked in for a test seven days after he was stopped.

A Lithuanian man who drove his employer’s van while drunk and had no driving licence, insurance, NCT or tax was disqualified from driving at Claremorris District Court this week.
Edvinas Dubickas, Boherduff, Claremorris was stopped on August 17 2009 at 1am when he was arrested on the suspicion of drink driving. A blood sample given showed 253mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The defendant, who was driving a commercial vehicle, had no driving licence, tax, NCT or insurance.

Golf Course Road resident and Leas Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Keith Martin, has warmly welcomed the signing of the contract for the new public park on the site of the Bog Field. The new park on the Golf Course Road will provide a playing pitch, a park area and cycling and walk way.
According to Cllr Martin: “This is great news for the area and not before time, the children and residents of the area will greatly benefit from having a safe area to exercise and play. The park will be completed to the highest standards and is only possible due to the sale of a portion of the area to provide a site for the new Gaelscoil building.

Fianna Fáil TD Beverly Flynn has allayed fears that Belmullet District Hospital is to be downgraded, following bed closures in the hospital last weekend which caused concern that this was a sign of a downgrading.

The elected members of Ballina Town Council once again called for a public toilet to be put into the town. Following a request from the members at a previous meeting, town clerk Carmel Murphy had researched the cost of providing such a convenience and had contacted a number of other towns of the same size as Ballina to see what they had done. She told the meeting that of 11 towns she contacted, four had no toilet and some of the other seven had discontinued their use because they were very expensive.
