Winter and Spring Leagues won in Castlebar

Balla

Last weekend was the Captain’s Scramble competition sponsored by McEllin Plant Hire. The team of Tom Jennings, PJ Brett and Mick Mellet were the winners on 42.2pts, with Martin Moylette, Aine and Eamon McSuibhne finishing in second. Third place went to John and Rose O’Connor and Tim Evans.

Ballina

Last Sunday’s 17 hole singles competition was won by John Horgan, with Darren Beattie finishing in second place and Des Fox in third. The entry sheet for the Captain’s Drive In competition is posted in the locker room. The ladies’ 12 hole competition was won by Elaine O’Hora on 23pts with Kathleen Connor in second place on 22pts. The club will be running its popular Masters Challenge over the Easter Weekend to coincide with the US Masters, further information is available from the committee.

Ballinrobe

The Inch’s Bar-sponsored gents’ competition was won by Colm Keane on 40pts, second place went to Ryan Jennings with David Robertson third and the Gross prize going to Michael C Burke. The ladies’ competition, sponsored by Martin Murphy Newsagents, went to Kathleen Collier on 34pts, Shannon Burke came second, Eileen Byrne third and Ann O’Reilly fourth. Today, Friday March 14 will be a Golf Style-sponsored open event with another open competition for gents and ladies taking place this Sunday, St Patrick’s Day and the Ciara McHugh Parish Cup up for grabs on Bank Holiday Monday, March 18.

Castlebar

Twenty six teams went into battle in the Winter League grand final last Sunday, but only one was victorious at the end. In a new format the teams of four were split into two pairs, with pairs mixed with pairings from other teams, and this added to the whole sense of excitement in the clubhouse all day. At the end the four men who stood victorious were Dom Molloy, Ioseph McGowan, Tony Grimes and Pat Moran who carded a total of 91pts. One point back and taking second place was the team of John MacDonagh, Gerald Sweeney, Shane O'Connor and Donal O'Donoghue.

This weekend coming is the Captain’s Drive In, which will take place on Saturday at 2pm followed by a 14-hole mixed scotch foursomes, which can be played on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. There will also be a 16-hole club competition on Monday. The ladies’ Spring League final saw six teams of five shooting for glory last Sunday. The team of Ger Lyons, Brigid Toher, Mary McHale, Dympna Smyth and Bernie Walsh came out on top and are crowned winners of the 2013 Spring League with their team total of 68pts.

Claremorris

Last weekend’s action in the Spring League saw Fergus Maxwell take the win on 36pts, Conor McGuinness jr came second, with Eamon Doherty third and Riana Keane winning the ladies’ prize. The team prize was won by the Balla High Road team, captained by Pat McGuinness, with 1,174 points. The prize presentations will take place following the Captain’s Drive In on St Patrick’s Day.

Green and Red Golfing Society

The following dates and venues have been arranged by the Green & Red Golfing Society for the coming season. Ballinrobe, April 27 from 11am to 12.30pm, Mulranny, May 11 for the Seamie Daly Open Tournament. Castlebar, June 8 from 9.40am to 11.20am. Claremorris, September 7 from 9am to 12pm (Captain’s Prize ) and the final outing will be in Mulranny for the Christmas Hampers.

Mulranny

This weekend coming will be another Open Weekend, you can play from Friday to Monday, with entry costing €5 for members and €15 for non-members. The nine-hole scramble following the Captain’s Drive In was won by the trio of Pat Mulchrone, Maureen O’Hara and Martin O’Carroll.

Westport

The gents’ club competition was won by Padraic Duffy on 39pts with John Kavanagh coming home in second place. Club captains Nuala Moody and Christy Madigan would like to thank all the members for the magnificent turn-out for their Captain’s Drive-In on Saturday last. The shotgun start format seems to be a real winner and the turnout of 68 competitors was the largest in recent years.
