Large Mayo contingent in Connacht championship action

There will be 30 Mayo boxers in action in Oughterard Community Centre tomorrow in the Connacht Boy 1, Boy 2, Boy 3 and u18 finals. The boxing will get underway at 10am with the first contest of the day. In Boy 1 Shea Pye, Knockmore will contest the 29kg final. William Maughan, Knockmore is in action in the 31kg final while St Anne’s Owen McDonagh is going for glory in the 33kg . The 42kg final is an all Mayo contest with Padraic McDonagh, Geesala and Declan McDonagh, Claremorris squaring off. The 42kg contest is another all Mayo bout, with Alex Maughan, Castlebar and Evan Ivers, Golden Gloves going toe to toe. Anthony Walsh, Golden Gloves will be looking for victory in the 46kg, with Stephen Maughan, Charlestown hoping to win the 50kg. Killasser’s Jason Maughan contests the 60kg final and it’s an all St Anne’s final in the 63kg showdown with James McDonagh and Rory Brennan facing each other.

In the Boy 2 finals, its an all Geesala final between James Doran and Thomas Doherty, while club-mate Michael Conroy is in action in the 36kg final. The 39kg final is a north-Mayo ding-dong between Knockmore’s Ciaran Brogan and Geesala’s Oisin Lally. It’s another all Mayo final at 46kg, with Ryan Heraty, St Anne’s against Matthew Lavin from Ballyhaunis. Alan Brennan, Charlestown will contest the 57kg, with David Groden, St Anne’s. Owen McDonagh from the same club will go toe to toe with Shane Corcoran from Olympic in the 66kg final, while his namesake from Ballyhaunis will contest the 75kg final.

The Boy 3 card will kick off with Cian Brennan from Ardagh/Crossmolina going for glory at 33kg. The 36kg final is another all Mayo event with Patrick Lawrence, Eagle and Jack Kavanagh, Swinford facing each other. Michael Conway, Ballyhaunis will contest the 42kg final, while his club-mate David Ward will take on Geesala’s Matthew McDonagh in the 44kg decider. The 50kg final will feature Knockmore’s Eric Nash with Ballinrobe’s Evan O’Brian contesting the 57kg final and Kasper Bura, St Anne’s in 66kg final action.

In the u18 finals there will be lots of Mayo interest with 11 Mayo boxers contesting the seven finals. It’s an all Ward and all Gurteen battle in the 54kg final with John facing Martin C. Sean Reilly from Ardagh/Crossmolina will contest the 60kg final. His club-mate Mark Hopkins will square off against Geesala’s Darren Timlon in the 64kg final. It’s another all Mayo final at the 69kg weight with Ardagh/Crossmolina’s Nicholas Gallagher meeting Eagle’s John Lawrence. St Anne’s Jason McDonagh and Ardagh/Crossmolina’s Keith Hopkins will meet at 75kg, while Martin Conroy, Ballyhaunis will go for glory in the 81kg final. The final bout of the 43-card event will see Valentine Regan from Ballyhaunis take on Loughrea’s Sean Ward in the 91kg final.
