Parents fined for teenager missing school

The parents of a 16-year-old boy who has missed numerous school days were convicted and fined at this week’s sitting of Ballina District Court for failing to comply in ensuring their child’s attendance at school.

At a previous sitting, the court heard that the son of Ellen and John Collins, 3 Avondale Court, Ballina, had low attendance at school. Since the last court appearance, out of 77 school days the child had missed 24 days. The child has sat his Junior Cert and will now leave school and attend Youthreach.

The parents were each convicted and fined €50 by Judge Mary Devins and both directed to contribute €50 each towards costs.
