Man who cancelled his insurance is put off the road

A man who cancelled his insurance policy and who was then involved in a road traffic accident was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

At 5pm on February 1 2012 gardaí attended a traffic accident at Garden Street. Kevin Newell, 1 Avondale Court, Ballina, was involved in the accident and was asked to produce his driving licence and insurance at Ballina Garda Station. His insurance policy showed that the policy was taken out on September 16 2011 and expired on March 15 2012. However enquiries made with the defendant’s insurance company showed that the policy was cancelled on October 13 2011.

The 26-year-old labourer has no previous convictions.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €600 and disqualified him from driving for two years.
