Winter league winners decided in Castlebar

Balla

The season officially commenced today with the Captains’ Drive in at Balla Golf Club. The weather was perfect for the occasion, and following three fine drives from Captain Aodán MacSuibhne, Lady Captain Breege Walsh and President Mary B Prendergast. The trio then led off the scramble competition which was won by Seamus Holian, Conor Holin and Marie Cresham. It was an all female trio in second place, with Catherine McNulty, Geraldine O’Malley and Kathleen Minogue coming second.

When the winter league wound up it as Catherine McNulty and Martin Moyle who came out on top with a score of 500pts. Catherine also picked up the overall lady winner prize for her 263pt total and John Parsons picked up the overall men’s winner scoring 251pts.

Ballina

Last week’s nine hole stableford competition was won by Anne White on a score of 17pts. There will be a nine hole stableford competition this coming Sunday, March 18 and a time sheet is in operation. Saturday will also see a special St Patrick’s Day, three ball scramble taking place. With celebrations, finger food, music, dancing and fun taking place in the clubhouse from 9pm. Well done to Frances Burke and Dolores Tuohy who beat Belmullet in the first round of the Irish Mail All Ireland foursomes 2012 competition.

Ballyhaunis

Todd Campbell in Ballinlough sponsored last weekend’s stableford competition in Ballyhaunis. Evan Henry was the winner of the junior section scoring 33pts. Anne Freeley took top spot in the ladies’ with 37pts, with Kay Keane coming second. The gents’ was claimed by Bill Maxwell on 44pts with Tomas Murphy coming second and Kevin Kennan third.

Castlebar

Last Sunday saw the Winter League grand final take centre stage in Castlebar. The Winter League has not been won by the same team in consecutive years since its inception and this year the speculation was rife as to whether this could be the time but with so many excellent teams in the mix it was simply impossible to predict who would win.

The winners on an absolutely brilliant score was the team of Paddy Kilgannon, TJ. Prendergast, Jimmy Murray and Pat Halligan. These four brought in a whopping 111 points to win by two clear points and it was an exceptional score.

The team of Roger Towey, Paul Kilcourse, Tony O'Malley and Dave McHale took second place with their top class score of 109 points and the defending champions, Tony Collins, Tom Moylett, Johan Collins and John McCarthy were third with a super 108 points.

Sunday was also grand final day in the Ladies’ Spring League. The ladies played a 13 hole final day and the winning team was that of Breda Gilvarry, comprising Breda, Antoinette Starken, Kathleen Flynn, Maeve Nevin and Jacinta Howley. Breda's team had a total of 75. In second place was the team of Regina Kerr, Cora Mulroy, Pauline O'Donohue, Eilish Flood and Merlin Clarke with their total of 71 points. The 2012 Captains, Henry Horkan and Edel Burke, performed the traditional Drive In last signifying the start of the 2012 season.

Mulranny

Christy McDonnell was the winner of the last of the 15 hole competitions with a score of 33 pts. He edged out Tom Mulloy who finished with 32 pts. John Joe Mulchrone was third, also on 32 pt. Captains, Martin McLaughlin and Margie Coughlan are inviting all members to join with them for their Captains’ Drive In on Sunday next at 9.30am to officially launch the new golf season. They especially invite new members to take part in the fun scramble, which will follow the drive in.

Westport

Maeve O’Farrell was the winner of the ladies’ competition last Sunday with a score of 29pts, she finished five points in front of Patricia O’Malley in second and Nuala Moody in third. The gents’ competition was claimed by Tony Canning scoring 36pts, with Gerry Moran taking second and Paul O’Neill third.

The members of Westport Golf Club wish our incoming captains every success during their year. Next Sunday’s competition is an 18 hole four ball better ball. Pat Bree's team is safely into the final of the gents Winter League. They will meet the winners of the remaining semi-final which is to be played before next Sunday.

As part of the ever ongoing changes at the club, the flat screen monitor in the lobby will highlight all club news and events on a weekly basis. The message board will be updated every Wednesday morning and will primarily be used to advise members of forthcoming sponsored events.
